Quick-reference guides for common Thailand wildlife emergencies.
Snake Bite
DO
- Stay calm and limit movement
- Immobilize the bitten limb at heart level
- Remove rings, watches & tight clothing
- Note time of bite & symptoms
- Get to hospital with antivenom ASAP — call 1669
- Photograph snake from a safe distance for ID
DON'T
- Don't cut or suck the wound
- Don't apply ice or tourniquet
- Don't drink alcohol or caffeine
- Don't try to catch or kill the snake
Jellyfish Sting (esp. Box Jellyfish)
DO
- Get out of the water immediately
- Douse stung area with VINEGAR for at least 30 seconds
- Carefully remove tentacles with tweezers/stick
- Begin CPR if unresponsive
- Call 1669 — box jellyfish stings are life-threatening
DON'T
- Don't rinse with fresh water
- Don't urinate on the sting
- Don't rub the area
Scorpion / Centipede / Spider Bite
DO
- Wash with soap & water
- For centipede: hot water immersion (40–45 °C)
- Cold compress for scorpion stings
- Take pain reliever / antihistamine
- Monitor for allergic reaction
DON'T
- Don't cut the wound
- Don't ignore spreading swelling
Stonefish / Lionfish Sting
DO
- Immerse wound in HOT water (45 °C) for 30–90 minutes
- Remove visible spines carefully
- Get to hospital for antivenom (stonefish)
DON'T
- Don't apply ice
- Don't ignore — pain can cause shock
Suspected Plant / Mushroom Poisoning
DO
- Save remaining sample for identification
- Take photos of the plant/mushroom
- Call 1669 even if symptoms are mild
DON'T
- Don't induce vomiting unless told by a doctor
- Don't wait — many toxins act with delay
Anaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reaction)
DO
- Use epinephrine auto-injector if available
- Lay person flat, raise legs
- Call 1669 immediately
- Loosen tight clothing
DON'T
- Don't give food or drink
- Don't let them stand or walk
