Scorpion Sting in Thailand: Treatment Guide

Thailand has around 20 scorpion species, mostly the large Asian Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus laoticus) and the smaller, more painful Black-tailed Scorpion. Deaths are extremely rare in adults, but stings to children, the elderly, or allergic individuals can be life-threatening.
Symptoms to watch for
- •Immediate burning pain at sting site (often described as worse than a wasp)
- •Localized swelling, redness, numbness lasting hours to days
- •Sweating, drooling, increased heart rate
- •In severe cases: muscle twitches, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat
- •Allergic reactions: hives, swelling of throat, anaphylaxis
DO
- ✓Wash the area with soap and water
- ✓Apply a cold compress (ice wrapped in cloth) for 10 minutes on, 10 off
- ✓Take ibuprofen or paracetamol for pain
- ✓Keep the limb still and elevated
- ✓Photograph the scorpion if safe — color and size guide treatment
- ✓Watch for systemic symptoms for 24 hours
DON'T
- ✗Do NOT cut or suck the wound
- ✗Do NOT apply a tourniquet
- ✗Do NOT apply hot water (works for stonefish, NOT scorpions)
- ✗Do NOT give aspirin to children
- ✗Do NOT ignore worsening symptoms
When to go to the ER
Go to the ER if: stung child under 12, difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe sweating, vomiting, muscle spasms, or any sign of allergic reaction. Most adult stings can be managed at home, but err on the side of caution.
