Description

Heavy-bodied viper (~1m) with chain of dark oval blotches on a tan body. Hisses loudly when threatened.

Habitat

Open grasslands, scrub, rice paddies, farmland.

Where Found in Thailand

Central and eastern Thailand. One of the leading causes of fatal snakebites in Asia.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain & swelling
  • Bleeding from gums/nose
  • Kidney failure
  • Pituitary damage
  • Shock

First Aid — DO

  • Immobilize limb
  • Pressure-immobilization bandage
  • Photograph from safe distance
  • Hospital immediately

DO NOT

  • DO NOT cut, suck, ice, or tourniquet
  • DO NOT delay — kidney damage starts within hours

Call 1669 — polyvalent antivenom required. Kidney monitoring essential.
